I didn’t understand myself before Daisy Chain. Meltdowns were frequent, and things frustrated me more, simply because I didn’t recognise them as autistic traits. I was only diagnosed in 2023, and Daisy Chain has been my support system throughout my entire diagnostic journey; from being on the pathway to now, accepting diagnosis.
Daisy Chain’s impact on my family extends beyond me, as my mum has accessed support through its services. The team also supported me in the most challenging of times, as they helped me move schools. I’m no longer in an education provision that wasn’t able to meet my needs, and the school I’m in now has helped me embrace my autistic identity and thrive.
Through the Rising Stars performing arts programme, I’ve built confidence I didn’t know I had. I’ve made real friendships, and I’ve been part of experiences that once felt impossible. I’ve taken part in the summer and winter showcases, been one of the performers at North East Charity Awards in 2023, sang at a beautiful ball at Hardwick Hall, an event with the PFC Trust and even performed in the Autism’s Got Talent Roadshow. These are memories I’ll carry with me for life.
I used to feel isolated, and I would not speak to many people at all, but now I can thank Daisy Chain for a sense of belonging and community. It has been amazing to be surrounded by other autistic people, and it has given me the confidence to connect with allistic people too. My mental health is much better than it used to be as I feel less alone, knowing there are so many others who share similar experiences to me and that there’s nothing ‘wrong’ with me.
I would tell anyone that is considering reaching out for support to just do it: don’t convince yourself that others have it worse, or feel like an imposter. It’s difficult to overcome these misconceptions and misunderstandings, but there is help out there, and Daisy Chain will be there to provide it every step of the way.
As a way of giving back, my Grandad and I performed some shows together in our local community, and I took part in a sponsored swim – in total we raised over £550 for Daisy Chain! It was amazing to be able to raise money AND do something I loved at the same time. I can’t wait to continue to support Daisy Chain in the future.
